    Book Picker Wheel

The book picker wheel is a fun answer to an overflowing to-be-read list. Add titles or genres and let the wheel choose your next read.

What is the book picker wheel?

The book picker wheel is a free online spinner loaded with 8 starter entries, such as Fantasy, Mystery, Classic, Non-fiction. You can change every slice, add your own items, set odds and keep a record of each result. People also search for it as “what book to read next”, “random book picker”, “tbr wheel”.

A hidden random generator only gives you an answer. This wheel shows every option and the spin itself, so the group can see nobody picked the result by hand.

Tips for the book picker wheel

    • Use Elimination to work through your list.
    • Weight older books higher to clear the backlog.
    • Share the wheel with your club.

    Beating "to be read" paralysis

Many readers have a stack of unread books and still can't decide what to read next. Load your to-be-read pile onto a wheel and spin when you finish a book. Turn on automatic removal so read books come off. Some readers keep two wheels, one for long books and one for short reads, and alternate between them to avoid burnout.

    Genre and challenge wheels

Spin a genre (fantasy, mystery, classic, non-fiction, romance, sci-fi, poetry, memoir) and choose a book in that genre. It's an easy way to break out of reading the same type of book. Popular challenges include reading a book from every continent, a book by a debut author, a book published the year you were born, a book under 200 pages and a book recommended by a friend. Put the prompts on a wheel and spin one each month.

    Book clubs

Book clubs often spend more time choosing than discussing. Each member suggests one or two titles, and the wheel picks the next read. Turn on removal so past choices drop off, and keep unchosen titles for future months. Use a second wheel of discussion questions during meetings: favourite character, most surprising moment, what you'd change about the ending, or which character you'd want as a friend.

    Classrooms and libraries

Teachers can spin for the next class read-aloud from a shortlist students have voted on. Librarians can run a "blind date with a book" display and use the wheel to pick which wrapped book a reader takes home. For reading logs, spin a response task: summarise in three sentences, draw a scene, write a letter to a character, or create a new cover.

    Reading with children

Children love choosing, and a wheel makes bedtime reading a little game. Put five favourite books on a wheel with cover pictures, and let the child spin. Add a "new book" slice to introduce something fresh. For early readers, a wheel of reading activities, such as reading to a pet, reading in a funny voice or reading under a blanket fort, adds variety.

    Writing and reviewing

Book bloggers and reviewers can spin which book to review next, or spin a review format, such as a short summary, a list of five reasons to read it, a character spotlight or a comparison with a similar book. It keeps content varied and helps work through a backlog.

    Building a balanced list

Add a mix of lengths, genres and authors. Use weights to favour books that have waited longest on your shelf or library books that are due back soon.

    Re-reads

Keep a separate wheel of favourite books for comfort re-reads, and spin it when life feels busy.

    Example

A reader with forty unread books spins every time she finishes one. In six months the pile is halved, and she has discovered two favourite authors she'd been putting off for years.

She also keeps a short "maybe later" wheel for books that didn't grab her, so nothing is abandoned for good.

Odds on the book picker wheel
