What is the team picker wheel?
The team picker wheel is a free online spinner loaded with 12 starter entries, such as Ava, Liam, Noah, Emma. You can change every slice, add your own items, set odds and keep a record of each result. People also search for it as “random team picker”, “team generator wheel”, “pick teams randomly”.
Because every slice is on screen and the spin plays out in front of everyone, the result feels fair. That matters when people care about the outcome.

Tips for the team picker wheel
- Use Elimination so each name lands on one team only.
- Alternate team colours by spinning for Team A then Team B.
- For constraints like "keep these two apart", use the Team Generator.
Picking captains and teams
A team picker wheel is ideal for the moments before a game starts. Spin to choose captains, then let captains take turns picking players, or spin each player onto a team in turn. Random selection removes the playground problem of the same people always being picked last. Everyone sees the wheel decide, so nobody feels left out by a person's choice.
Two ways to split a group
Captain draft: spin twice to choose two captains, then spin to decide who picks first. Captains alternate choosing players. This keeps some strategy while making the starting point fair. Full random: spin each name and assign them to teams in rotation (red, blue, red, blue), or use the team generator to split the whole list into balanced groups at once. Full random is quickest and avoids anyone being chosen last.
Balancing skill
Pure randomness can occasionally stack one team. If skill matters, split players into tiers, such as experienced and newer, and spin each tier separately onto the teams. Every team gets a share of each tier while membership stays random. For regular groups, keep a note of past teams and re-spin if the same people keep landing together.
Sports and PE ideas
Spin for captains at the start of each lesson. Choose which team kicks off or serves first. Pick the order for penalty shoot-outs. Choose positions for a rotation-based game so everyone tries goalkeeper. Spin for warm-up leader and cool-down leader. Small rituals like these keep lessons moving and give every student a turn in the spotlight.
Office and event ideas
Quiz nights: spin people into teams so colleagues mix beyond their usual groups. Hackathons: draw team members from different departments. Workshops: assign groups for breakout tasks. Sports days: split staff into house teams. Mixing people randomly helps new staff meet colleagues and breaks up cliques.
Teams with fixed numbers
If teams must have exact sizes, such as five-a-side, spin with automatic removal and fill each team in turn until it's full. If the numbers don't divide evenly, decide beforehand whether the extra player rotates in as a substitute or joins the smallest team. Saying the rule first prevents arguments.
Keeping the result visible
Leave the history panel open so everyone can see which team each person joined. Export it if you need to record teams for a tournament or league.
Example: a Friday five-a-side
Twelve colleagues turn up for football. The organiser puts the six most regular players in one wheel and the other six in another. Spinning alternately from each wheel onto bibs and non-bibs gives two teams of six with a fair mix of experience, chosen in under a minute and with no awkward last picks.
At half-time, they can spin again to swap two players if the score is lopsided, which keeps the game competitive for everyone.

Odds on the team picker wheel
With equal weights each of the 12 entries has a 8.3% chance on every spin. Change a weight and that entry's chance becomes its weight divided by the total. Elimination removes winners and recalculates the odds for the rest. Test any setup on the randomness audit.
